The town of Ayr lies 37 miles south of the city of Glasgow and is situated on the beautiful sixty five mile Ayrshire coastline on the south west of Scotland. With a population of approx. 46,000, Ayr is the largest settlement in Ayrshire and the 14th largest in Scotland. Established as a Royal Burgh in 1205 Ayr served as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the medieval period. The ramparts of a citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell's men during the mid-17th century sits on the southern bank of the river Ayr.
Ayr offers an excellent base for water-sports; sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding etc and boasts many municipal and private golf courses. Sports enthusiasts can also find local rugby, cricket, tennis and bowling clubs as well as specialist sporting organisations.
Famous the world over as the home of Robert Burns, Ayr is a popular seaside escape for tourists and is a super country location for regular commuters to Glasgow with excellent transport links to the city centre and being under an hours drive from Glasgow Airport.
The annual Scottish Grand National steeplechase, Ayrshire Handicap and Ayr Gold Cup have welcomed the horse racing community since 1965. Ayr is also home to the Scottish International Airshow.
